Sony Warns PlayStation Customers Against Harassing Support Staff Amid Disc Backlash

Sony Japan implements a new anti-harassment policy to protect customer service employees facing severe backlash over the company's shift toward an all-digital future.

Sony Japan has instituted a strict new anti-harassment policy to protect its customer service employees from a vocal contingent of dissatisfied consumers. The policy comes in the wake of widespread backlash over Sony's decision to end game disc production and focus on an all-digital future. Nearly every Sony announcement and social media post has been met with calls for the company to reverse its choice, leaving support staff caught in the crossfire.

According to the newly introduced guidelines, Sony will restrict individuals who exceed reasonable interaction standards with customer support. This includes bans on unreasonable demands for compensation or apologies, abusive language, threats, and forcing employees to prostrate themselves. Furthermore, unauthorized visits to offices or related facilities can result in customers being cut off from help desks. Sony has stated that it is prepared to work with lawyers and the police if necessary to safeguard its workers.

The hostility toward support staff coincides with a wave of broader controversies facing the company. Sony recently responded to a class action lawsuit accusing it of failing to clearly inform consumers that its digital storefront sells game licenses rather than full games, and the company agreed to pay nearly $8 million to PlayStation customers in a digital game price settlement. Additionally, various publishers have accused Sony of anti-competitive practices and monopolistic behavior regarding its digital marketplace.

Despite negative comments, week-long boycotts, and ongoing legal scrutiny, Sony continues to move cautiously forward with its plan to eliminate physical game discs, showing no indication that it intends to reverse course.
