PlayStation Creator Ken Kutaragi Warns Games Have Stagnated Creatively
At a Tokyo university talk, former Sony executive Ken Kutaragi said modern games rely on old creative methods despite advances in graphics and scale.
Former Sony executive Ken Kutaragi, known for leading the original PlayStation project, warned that the gaming industry has grown stagnant in creativity despite major advances in graphics and scale.
Speaking at Japan's University of Electro-Communications, Kutaragi said the approach to making games has not changed much since his time developing the first PlayStation console. He added that the industry is at a turning point and ready to move to the "next stage."
Kutaragi emphasized the importance of curiosity, especially among younger developers. "The moment you lose your curiosity and think, this is probably as good as it gets, it's all over," he said.
He encouraged developers and students to lead rather than follow, recalling how the original PlayStation team aimed to "change the world" through cutting-edge technology. Kutaragi believes the industry has not yet reached its limits and still has significant breakthroughs ahead.
His comments come amid broader concerns in the gaming sector, including rising costs and shifts in player expectations around accessibility and innovation.
