Sony Ending PlayStation Disc Production “Was Always Going to Happen”, Says Analyst
Games industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls comments on Sony's decision to end PlayStation disc production, calling it an inevitability driven by shifting digital revenue and rising component costs.
While Sony’s announcement regarding the end of PlayStation disc production caught many by surprise, games industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls believes the move was an inevitability. Speaking in an interview with Edge Magazine, Harding-Rolls highlighted that physical game sales push revenue outside of Sony's direct ecosystem. By eliminating the costs of printing and shipping physical discs, Sony and its publishing partners stand to retain a larger share of revenue.
Component shortages have also weighed heavily on the industry. Harding-Rolls noted that hardware markets suffer from these pressures and suggested that soaring component costs might push next-gen hardware prices toward $1,000, which would significantly limit the potential audience. Ending physical disc production serves as a cost-cutting measure for Sony as it navigates future pricing and hardware scalability. Regarding the January 2028 deadline, Harding-Rolls believes the timeline aligns with Sony’s upcoming console launch schedule, as the PlayStation 6 is expected to be either already released or close to launching by that time, providing a clean generational transition.
Sony CFO Lin Tao addressed the community backlash during an earnings call Q&A session in July, emphasizing the shift toward a future digital ecosystem. Tao noted that content digitalization across the board has been progressing rapidly and that Sony carefully considered the decision before moving forward. Acknowledging strong community opinions and the deep emotional connections players have with physical media, Tao stated that Sony understands these sentiments and will continue exploring ways to engage gamers within the future digital landscape.
