PlayStation 6 Hardware Design Complete, Rumored for November 2027 Launch with Handheld Model
According to hardware leaker KeplerL2, Sony has finalized the PS6 chip design with 40 teraflops of performance and double the power of the PS5, though it falls short of the new Xbox's 56 teraflops. A portable model is also planned.

PlayStation 6 hardware design has been completed and is ready for manufacturing, according to hardware leaker KeplerL2. The term "taped out" in industry parlance means Sony has locked down the chip specifications and design, pointing toward a November 2027 launch window.
The PS6 is rumored to deliver 40 teraflops of GPU performance, compared to the upcoming Xbox's 56 teraflops. However, raw teraflops don't always translate directly to gaming performance. Mark Cerny, PlayStation's system architect, has previously discussed "flopflation" and how this metric alone doesn't reliably determine a device's real-world power. The PS5 itself is technically around 20 percent less powerful than the Xbox Series X on paper, yet performance differences in actual games remain minimal.
According to the leak, the PS6 will offer roughly double the performance of the PS5, featuring 12x faster ray tracing and a more efficient RDNA 5 architecture. Sony's proprietary PSSR upscaler is expected to receive an upgrade, reducing computational overhead while maintaining image quality.
A portable version of the PS6 is also in the works, though details about its gaming capabilities and role within the broader product lineup remain unclear. KeplerL2 suggests Sony may undercut Microsoft on price due to its more modest design approach. Current material cost estimates stand around $960, though AI-related demand could shift this figure. If accurate, a $900 launch price is considered feasible if Sony accepts a small loss, recovering costs through game sales and PS Plus subscriptions.
The biggest unanswered question facing consumers is final pricing, which Sony will likely need to address within the next six months. While KeplerL2 has established credibility as a hardware leaker, this information remains unofficial and unconfirmed by PlayStation.
