Sony has released a new firmware update for the PS Portal that includes a battery preservation feature. Version 7.1.7 adds a charging limit option that caps the handheld's battery charge at 80%, helping to extend the device's long-term battery health.

The new setting is accessible under Settings > System > Battery. Sony states in the update notes: "Selecting a charge limit over 80% might impact battery performance and overall stability, reducing long-term battery health."

Limiting full charges to 80% is a common practice to reduce stress and chemical wear on lithium-ion batteries. Charging devices to 100% and leaving them plugged in accelerates battery degradation over time.

Beyond the battery management feature, v7.1.7 includes minor improvements to system software functionality and the usability of messages. The update is available now for all PS Portal users.
