Dave Bautista Replaces Ryan Hurst as Kratos in God of War TV Show

Amazon Prime Video's live-action God of War television adaptation has officially cast former professional wrestler and actor Dave Bautista as its main hero, Kratos. Bautista takes over the role from Ryan Hurst, who was previously cast as the character but was forced to leave the production due to a severe bicep injury sustained on set. According to reports, waiting for Hurst's injury to heal would have delayed production until 2027, leading Amazon and Sony to make the decision to recast the role.

With Bautista now onboard, production is expected to resume in the coming weeks. However, all previously filmed scenes featuring Hurst will need to be completely reshot. Despite prior whispers that young star Callum Vinson might also be recast, reports have confirmed that Vinson remains attached to the project to play Kratos' son, Atreus.

The troubled adaptation has previously faced hurdles, including an early first-look image of Hurst as Kratos that drew criticism online for looking unfaithful to the source material. Despite these challenges, Amazon has shown strong confidence in the property, having already greenlit two seasons of the series, which are expected to shoot back-to-back following the production reset.

The wider cast for the series includes Ed Skrein as Baldur, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Max Parker as Heimdall, Sonya Walger as Freya, and Alastair Duncan reprising his role as Mimir. The series is expected to follow the plotline of the two most recent God of War games. An official release date for the Prime Video adaptation has not yet been announced.
