Marvel's Wolverine PS5 Sales Fall Sharply in Japan Against Spider-Man Games
Marvel's Wolverine sold just 20,039 physical copies in its first week in Japan, significantly underperforming the Spider-Man franchise on PlayStation.

Marvel's Wolverine sold 20,039 physical copies during its opening week in Japan, marking a substantial decline compared to Insomniac's Spider-Man games in the region.
According to Famitsu data, the figures show a steep downward trend across the Spider-Man releases. Marvel's Spider-Man on PS4 opened with 125,154 physical sales, while Spider-Man 2 on PS5 reached 77,348. Miles Morales sold 41,522 copies across PS5 and PS4. Wolverine's 20,039 represents less than a third of Spider-Man 2's opening performance, despite both launching exclusively on PS5.
Several factors likely contributed to Wolverine's lower sales. The PS5 has not achieved the same market penetration as the PS4 in Japan, where Nintendo Switch 2 dominates this generation. The figures also exclude digital purchases, which may represent a significant portion of sales.
Spider-Man's broader cultural popularity also plays a role. The web-slinger has historically maintained a larger fanbase than Wolverine, giving the character an inherent audience advantage at launch. Wolverine remains a popular Marvel character, but the sales gap suggests the title faced an uphill battle in the Japanese market specifically.
The data highlights the ongoing challenge for PlayStation 5 titles in a region where the previous generation console achieved much stronger adoption.
