Sony brings AI upscaling to base PS5 with Quick Spectral Super Resolution
Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaling technology optimized for the standard PS5 console. Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei receive patches today to support the feature, with broader availability coming to all
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), bringing AI-guided upscaling technology to the base PS5 console. The new feature improves both image detail and stability, marking a significant expansion of visual enhancement capabilities across PlayStation's hardware lineup.
QSSR evolved from Project Amethyst, a collaboration between PlayStation and AMD. The technology addresses a previous limitation: the computational demands of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), the upscaling system on PS5 Pro, made it impossible to implement on the standard PS5. Two key innovations enabled QSSR's arrival. A streamlined neural network architecture and hand-tuned implementation maximize performance on PS5 hardware while maintaining visual quality improvements.
PSSR remains the gold standard upscaling solution on PS5 Pro. QSSR provides a more accessible alternative for base PS5 owners, using AI to analyze game images pixel by pixel and upscale them with greater detail and stability than conventional approaches.
Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first titles to support QSSR, receiving patches today. Both games now offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, described the impact on Marvel's Wolverine: "QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan's epic journey. It's a perfect companion to the launch of Marvel's Wolverine, and it brings a great taste of the PS5 Pro experience to our players on PS5."
Sucker Punch Productions highlighted QSSR's effectiveness with fine details in Ghost of Yōtei. Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch, stated: "QSSR excels at resolving the fine details in our characters and environments and does so with a level of temporal stability that hasn't been possible on the PS5 console until now. We've long wished that all PS5 players could experience the incredible image quality that PSSR brings to PS5 Pro, and QSSR is a positive step towards that goal."
Sony plans to offer QSSR broadly to all PlayStation developers. The company anticipates wider adoption across upcoming titles as studios integrate the technology into their graphics pipelines. The expansion represents PlayStation's strategy to maintain visual competitiveness across its console ecosystem while managing hardware performance constraints.
