Overwatch has experienced a much more positive mood recently following a successful rebrand earlier this year. Speaking to GameSpot at BlizzCon, associate game director Alec Dawson attributed the recent success to shedding the fear of altering core systems. This shift includes introducing a Perk system that fundamentally changes hero capabilities, embarking on a year-long narrative, and actively working to break player expectations.

"Being able to continue to surprise people is really important," Dawson stated. He noted that while the team listens to player requests for narrative and more heroes, they also want to push boundaries and innovate. Dawson added that the community has been very receptive to these changes over the past year.

Game director Aaron Keller noted that the game's first narrative arc spanning an entire year, which focuses on the power struggle between Vendetta and Doomfist for Talon, has been a major draw for players who are eager to see the conclusion. Combining mechanical shifts with world-building story arcs appears to be a winning formula. Furthermore, Blizzard's gamble to drop five new heroes at once earlier in the year helped ease player toxicity.

More changes are on the horizon for the hero shooter. Developers confirmed that a big rework is coming for two legacy heroes, Roadhog and Sombra.
