Diablo 5 Confirmed at BlizzCon 2026, Replacing Diablo 4 Expansions

Blizzard unveiled Diablo 5 at BlizzCon 2026, confirming the franchise is moving to a new mainline entry rather than continuing with Diablo 4 expansions. The game is scheduled for spring 2029.

Diablo 4 will receive no further expansions following Lord of Hatred, which released this year. The game already has two expansions: 2024's Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred. Seasonal updates like Season of Hell's Legacy will continue for Diablo 4, but large expansion content has ended.

One significant departure in Diablo 5 is the complete removal of towns and safe zones, a structural change tied to the game's narrative premise. Diablo has defeated humanity before the story begins.

Executive producer Matt Zitterman told GameSpot that the decision to make a sequel stemmed from deep community analysis. "Who are Diablo players? Why are they playing Diablo? What do they want out of a Diablo game?" Zitterman said. "That is a really critical step in the early conceptual phase for a game."

After examining player feedback about Diablo 4, Blizzard determined that achieving its vision for the franchise required "deeply structural changes" that would have been "frankly hard to do in an expansion." Zitterman emphasized the focus on Diablo as the central character. "Diablo is the main villain. Diablo is the guy that we want to tell a real story about," he said. "We want to tell a story that's on par, and hopefully exceeds, the story that we told with Lilith and Mephisto, and to do that in an expansion just didn't feel right. We needed to give him his own game."
