Blizzard Confirms StarCraft Shooter Won't Be Xbox Exclusive
Blizzard has clarified that its upcoming StarCraft shooter, announced at BlizzCon 2026 with a 2030 launch, will not be exclusive to Xbox. The publisher declined to specify which platforms will receive the game, but ruled out Xbox exclusivity despite

Blizzard has confirmed that StarCraft, its newly announced third-person shooter, will not be exclusive to Xbox, though the publisher is remaining vague about which platforms will actually receive the game.
The confirmation came after Kotaku pressed Blizzard for clarity on the game's platform plans. A Blizzard spokesperson told the outlet that "calling it an Xbox exclusive would be incorrect," but declined to elaborate further on what platforms will be supported at launch in 2030.
The clarification comes as Microsoft, which acquired Blizzard as part of its nearly $75.4 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard in 2023, has recently shifted strategy toward making games exclusive to Xbox consoles. Recent titles like Gears of War: E-Day are being positioned as Xbox exclusives, marking a departure from the company's earlier multiplatform approach that saw franchises like Forza and Halo release on PlayStation 5.
StarCraft has historically been a PC-centric franchise. From the original 1998 release through StarCraft: Remastered in 2017, the series remained primarily on Windows and Mac OS, with only StarCraft 64 breaking that pattern on Nintendo 64 in 2000. Given Blizzard's decades-long history as a PC-first developer and its operation of the Battle.net launcher, a PC release seems certain.
Blizzard's vagueness may stem from the game's early announcement. With a 2030 release date, both Xbox and PlayStation will likely have launched new hardware by then, leaving open questions about which generations the game will support. The publisher could be waiting for clarity on next-gen console specifications before finalizing its platform strategy.
Creative director Dan Hay confirmed that StarCraft is "focusing on single player" and will be third-person. The game will feature encounters with both the Protoss and Zerg factions from the StarCraft universe. Blizzard also indicated the game is "not a seasonal game," with lead developers describing it as having "a beginning, a middle, and an end."
The timing of the announcement is notable given that StarCraft hasn't received a new mainline entry since 2017, making the 15-year gap before 2030's launch one of the longest in the franchise's history.
