Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter Serves as Both a Remake and a Future Testbed
Nihon Falcom follows up last year's remake with Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, delivering an iterative sequel that refines its RPG systems and offers a glimpse into the series' future.

Nihon Falcom has launched Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, arriving roughly a year after the release of the first remake. The sequel picks up immediately where the previous game left off, following protagonist Estelle Bright as she navigates her new role as a Senior Bracer while searching for Joshua. Alongside Estelle's personal journey, players must contend with the mysterious secret society Ouroboros as its rogue's gallery of operatives starts causing problems across Liberl.
Geographically, the game has players retracing their steps across the same regions visited in the first title, though framed within a new narrative context. Critics note that this structural choice mirrors how society and geography function in real life, while also presenting certain pacing challenges. To address traversal friction during the Orbal Shutdown, Falcom implemented a reset on fast travel points until players revisit them. Furthermore, features like High-Speed Mode help mitigate the tedium of revisiting familiar monster-infested terrain.
Beyond its function as a faithful recreation, 2nd Chapter incorporates subtle shifts that point toward the future of the broader franchise. Rather than relying on clumsy retcons, the development team introduced minor references to later events and entirely new segments near the end of the game that could conceivably have occurred offscreen during the original release. The visual scope of elements like the Liber Ark suspended in the air across Liberl also raises questions about how future entries, such as upcoming Calvard games, might handle environmental scale.
Combat retains many of the fundamental mechanics and pain points found in contemporary entries of the series, including large enemy HP pools and real-time button-mashing elements. However, Falcom has introduced various tweaks to speed up combat flow, such as faster follow-up abilities and more responsive Burst attacks. Voice performances, particularly from actors like Brianna Knickerbocker as Tita, received high praise for adding emotional weight to critical narrative sequences. Backed by solid technical execution on platforms like the Switch 2, the remake successfully captures the ambition of the original trilogy while laying groundwork for the series ahead.
