A group of hackers has claimed responsibility for the breach. Recently, the responsible party put up a paid poll to let voters decide which gameplay sections to show next and advertised a cryptocurrency, leading Stop Killing Games to characterize the actions as an attempt to grift gamers for money and attention rather than fighting for genuine consumer rights.

Stop Killing Games explicitly asked the public not to send money to the hackers, stating that illegal means are unacceptable and do not protect the right to keep using purchased products. The organisation expressed sympathy for the developers at Rockstar who must endure the ordeal, particularly occurring just over a week before Rockstar's official Extended Look premiere.
