GTA 6 Reportedly Requires PS5 Firmware 14.10, Blocking Jailbroken Consoles

PlayStation Store data indicates Grand Theft Auto VI will need at least firmware 14.10.00.00, which patches exploits used for jailbreaks. Rockstar and Sony have not confirmed the requirement.

PlayStation Store backend data shows that Grand Theft Auto VI will require PS5 firmware 14.10.00.00 or newer when it launches on November 19, 2026. The detail comes from PlayStation Game Size, an account that tracks store listings, which posted a single line on October 2, 2026: “Grand Theft Auto VI requires at least PS5 Update 14.10.00.00.” Neither Rockstar Games nor Sony has commented on the finding.

Sony released firmware 26.06-14.10.00 on October 1, 2026. The official patch notes mention security fixes and improved performance and stability. The update follows firmware 14.00, which arrived on September 16 and disrupted the Relapse exploit, a web browser-based method that gave kernel-level access on firmware 13.60 and below. As of October 4, no public exploit exists for firmware 14.10.

For players with unmodified consoles, the requirement means a routine update before launch. Consoles with automatic updates enabled likely already have 14.10 or will receive it soon. Disc copies of GTA 6 will also prompt the necessary system update before the game starts.

Owners of jailbroken PS5 consoles face a choice: update to 14.10 and lose the ability to run homebrew and game backups, or stay on older firmware and be unable to launch GTA 6. The hacking scene has previously bypassed newer firmware, but no timeline for a 14.10 exploit has been announced.

The firmware floor may simply reflect the developer kit version used to build the game, a common practice for major releases. Whether Rockstar intentionally set the minimum to block piracy on day one is unknown. No similar requirement has been reported for the Xbox Series X|S version of GTA 6.

Players can verify their firmware version by opening Settings, selecting System, then System Software, and choosing Console Information. Manual updates are available through the same menu or via USB using Sony’s official guide. Pre-order and edition details are listed on Rockstar’s official GTA VI page.
