New Open-World Shooter StarCraft Announced by Blizzard with 2030 Target Release Date

Blizzard has officially announced a brand-new StarCraft game during BlizzCon 2026. While the long-running series originated as a real-time strategy experience, the upcoming title shifts genres entirely and is billed as an open-world third-person shooter featuring both single-player and co-op elements. Players will step into the power armor of a Dominion Marine, with the development team emphasizing a strong power fantasy. Combat is designed to make players feel like living tanks handling heavy Gauss rifles while fighting through Zerg forces.

Fans will need to exercise patience, as Blizzard is currently targeting a 2030 release date for the project. According to Blizzard general manager Dan Hay, the studio chose to reveal the game early to gather community feedback now that the team has established sufficient progress on the title's emotion, identity, and feel. Official platforms have not yet been formally revealed by the developer.

Regarding the game structure, Hay indicated that StarCraft will function as a hybrid experience rather than a traditional live-service title. The adventure will feature a definitive conclusion and aim to feel like a boxed product that players can return to at any time, anchored around named characters and a structured narrative rather than endless live-service loops.

The story takes place 70 years after the events of StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void. This substantial time jump occurs after the Protoss reclaimed Aiur, Valerian Mengsk reformed the Dominion, and Zagara led the Zerg toward peace. While Blizzard is keeping narrative specifics tightly under wraps, the cinematic trailer showcased new Dominion recruits facing off against Zerg forces, and the Protoss will also make an appearance in the galaxy.
