Sony CEO Notes PS6 Lacks a Release Date Amid Component Shortages

Players eagerly anticipating the next generation of PlayStation hardware will have to wait, as Sony currently has no launch window or release date set for the PS6. Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki addressed the future of the console ecosystem, noting that the company is missing traditional seven-year generational expectations.

While consoles typically see a new full iteration around seven years after a previous launch—which would point toward late 2027 given the PS5's late 2020 release—Totoki explained that industry-wide obstacles are complicating hardware timelines. He pointed specifically to ongoing trade wars and the current state of chip and energy supplies, emphasizing that the corporation must take action to navigate the landscape.

A major factor straining component manufacturing is the massive demand for parts driven by data centers and generative AI technology, making global scale launches difficult. In addition to supply constraints, the wider gaming industry faces instability, including major publisher layoffs, project cancellations, and delays across numerous releases. With triple-A projects continuing to run well on the PS5, the current climate points to a more cautious approach for hardware progression.
