Silent Hill: Townfall Review Highlights First-Person Horror and 1990s Scottish Setting
A review of Silent Hill: Townfall on PlayStation 5 explores its bite-sized first-person campaign, 1990s Scottish setting, and traditional survival horror puzzles.

Silent Hill: Townfall brings a fresh perspective to the long-running survival horror franchise by adopting a first-person viewpoint for the first time in its history. Set in a quiet fishing village in Scotland called St. Amelia, the game follows protagonist Simon Ordell as he returns to investigate his connection to the area after a heavy fog traps residents inside. Developed by Screen Burn, the title offers a bite-sized campaign that takes roughly ten hours to complete while retaining classic series hallmarks.
Players navigate deserted streets, local shops, and lived-in houses from the 1990s, utilizing a handheld device called the CRTV to solve puzzles, view plot-centric videos, and track enemy movements. The game incorporates era-specific technology into its brain teasers, including floppy disks, printers, and top-up cards for electricity boxes. While the environmental exploration and grounded puzzles receive praise, the combat system has been criticized as overly simple and repetitive. Enemies feature limited attack patterns that make them easy to bypass or defeat, which diminishes the tension in the second half of the game.
