Ex-PlayStation Boss Shawn Layden Discusses PS6 Handheld Rumors and Sony Hardware Challenges

In the wake of ongoing rumors that Sony is preparing to release a handheld companion alongside the rumored PS6, former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden has spoken out about the corporate hurdles of managing multiple hardware platforms. Speaking during an interview on KiwiTalkz, the former chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios explained that the hardware manufacturer has historically "really struggles" when trying to juggle two distinct pieces of hardware at the same time.

Addressing the rumored handheld device—which has occasionally been referred to as 'Canis' in earlier reports—Layden pointed to past overlapping product generations. Anticipating that people might cite the PlayStation Portable as a major success, he noted that while that handheld was out in the market, he was simultaneously struggling to sell the PlayStation 3. According to Layden, the conflict extends beyond engineering and development resources to encompass vital marketing campaigns as well. He described a scenario where a single managing company inevitably steals resources from one project to fund another, causing a division of focus and internal competition.

"You almost have to set up two different companies to do it, where neither one is worried about what the other one is doing, they’re just trying to be successful in their own right," Layden said during the chat. He suggested that if Sony were to ultimately release a dedicated handheld device next generation, the company might instead consider consolidating its gaming activities entirely around that mid-size platform rather than maintaining two separate ecosystems.

While Sony has not officially confirmed the existence of a next-generation handheld or the specifics of the PS6, SIE CEO Hideaki Nishino recently hinted that future consoles could leverage technologies adaptable to various forms and locations. Meanwhile, hardware industry insider Kepler_L2 addressed previous speculation surrounding the technical specifications and a potential $600 price point for a handheld device, stating that such a price is "definitely not possible right now" due to rising costs in LPDDR memory driven by data center product demand.

Additional industry analysis and speculation continue to swirl around the timeline of Sony's next hardware generation. An analyst firm recently suggested that Sony's reported plans to halt physical game disc production in January 2028 practically guarantee that a subsequent home console will not see a release until 2028 at the absolute earliest.
