Rockstar Defends GTA 6 Staff Firings as Final Tribunal Hearing Begins
Rockstar Games reiterated its rejection of union claims as the final employment tribunal hearing over the dismissal of 34 developers begins in Glasgow.

Rockstar Games has restated its position as the final employment tribunal hearing over the dismissal of 34 developers begins in Glasgow. The hearing, which started on September 10th and is scheduled to run until at least October 15th, centers on whether the firings were justified or constituted unfair dismissal and blacklisting.
In a statement provided to IGN, a Rockstar spokesperson said, "Individuals across the UK and Canada were dismissed for gross misconduct following the sharing of confidential company information, not because of alleged trade union membership or activity. We reject the claims and will defend them vigorously before the tribunal."
The firings occurred in November of last year, reportedly triggered by discussion of a new company Slack policy in a union-run Discord server. Rockstar has maintained that the developers shared confidential information on a public forum, while the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) and the former staff argue the dismissals were motivated by union activity.
Earlier this year, an employment tribunal ruled that the fired developers could pursue claims of blacklisting against Rockstar during this final hearing. The union is seeking reinstatement or compensation for the workers, while Rockstar aims to prove it acted within its rights.
Jason Lewis, a former Rockstar developer and IWGB member, said in a union press release, "We have fought tooth and nail to get to this point, not just to be able to win justice for ourselves, but to draw a line in the sand for any employer that thinks it can attack workers for unionising." He added, "It has been an emotional journey and it is not over yet, but we can now see the finish line, and justice at last feels within reach."
The fired developers have asked supporters to purchase specially-designed union t-shirts rather than boycott GTA 6, with proceeds going toward their Fighting Fund. Meanwhile, current Rockstar employees have formed the Rockstar Games Workers Union and are seeking formal recognition from the company ahead of GTA 6's console release in November.
