PS5 and Xbox Hardware Sales Surge in the UK Following Netflix's Grand Theft Auto VI Special

Console sales in the United Kingdom experienced a notable boost recently, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox platforms seeing sales increase by 33% and 34% respectively. According to data provided by Nielsen HQ, the surge was driven by Netflix’s special presentation titled Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. The special reportedly attracted 31.1 million viewers in just four days, generating widespread hype that resulted in the PS5 selling out at numerous retail locations.

This retail bump arrives during a challenging period for the UK hardware market, which has seen overall sales drop by 14.4% compared to the same period last year, largely due to a 32% year-on-year decline in PS5 purchases. Speaking with The Game Business, Ronan Patrick of Newzoo noted that the upcoming release of *Grand Theft Auto VI* this November might not spark as massive a hardware sales wave as some expect, pointing out that inflation-adjusted prices make the PS5 roughly 67% more expensive and Xbox twice as expensive as their launch counterparts.

Despite caution regarding long-term hardware spikes, industry analysts anticipate an uptick in the install base due to blockbuster titles like *Grand Theft Auto VI* and *Call of Duty*. Meanwhile, consumer spending is projected to pivot toward software. In related merchandise news, Sony recently revealed a collaboration with Rockstar Games to release two limited-edition DualSense controllers themed around *Grand Theft Auto VI*, which are scheduled to launch alongside the game on November 19.
