A recent social media campaign encouraging players to boycott PlayStation consoles and services resulted in no measurable impact on US engagement. The protest, known as the PlayStation Blackout, took place between August 23 and August 30. It was organized in response to Sony's decision to cease physical disc production.

Circana analyst Mat Piscatella shared insight into the campaign's outcomes using tracking data from the United States. When asked if the protest caused any fluctuations in player behavior, Piscatella stated that tracking showed no significant change at all in player count or engagement. The data reflects activity across a user base of approximately 93 million PlayStation 5 consoles.

Observers and community members previously raised concerns regarding the design of the protest. The initial window lasted only one week, leading many to speculate that the duration was too short to affect overall metrics. Furthermore, the timing of the demonstration overlapped with Gamescom 2026, drawing many active community members away from their hardware. While subsequent calls urged users to unplug their consoles indefinitely, the initial organized push failed to alter national tracking metrics.

Following the conclusion of the primary window, the movement's spearheading group, DoesItPlay, announced that the minimum requirement for the blackout had been reached. The group added that there would be future opportunities to take action again.
