Unlike Major Console Makers, Panic is Refunding Playdate Tariff Fees to Customers

Panic has announced that it will automatically refund the tariff fees charged to customers who purchased its Playdate handheld console. When sweeping tariffs were implemented under US President Donald Trump, Panic increased the price of the Playdate device to compensate for increased costs, explaining on its website that low hardware profit margins made it impossible to absorb the charges.

Following a ruling where those tariffs were deemed unlawful and government refunds became available, Panic secured its refund and is now passing the money back to consumers. Impacted customers who paid the surcharge are receiving an automatic refund of $12.36, which will arrive in their accounts within a few days. According to Panic's Cabel Sasser, the company decided to return the money because it was simply not theirs to keep, despite the paperwork and technical work required to build a processing system for the refunds. Neven Mrgan further noted on Bluesky that while the process involved significant effort and lost sales following the initial announcement, the team agreed that refunding customers was the correct decision.

This consumer-friendly action stands in marked contrast to larger video game console makers like Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft. While those larger corporations have largely avoided directly addressing tariff refunds, companies such as Sony and Nintendo highlighted the positive financial impact of receiving the funds on their revenue. The lack of consumer refunds from major companies has resulted in ongoing class-action lawsuits. In a court filing regarding the matter, Nintendo defended its pricing strategy by arguing that it implemented modest price adjustments and that consumers willingly agreed to purchase products at the advertised prices.

Although Panic's decision is unlikely to pressure major industry giants into following suit, it highlights that returning unlawful tariff surcharges to buyers is achievable. The company originally detailed its struggles with the tariffs in February, expressing a desire to eventually eliminate the surcharge line item entirely. With the refunds now distributed, Panic has successfully returned the extra charges directly to the players who supported the handheld system.
