PC Gamer Created a Massive Photo Mosaic from 33 Years of Magazine Archives

A PC Gamer editor built an interactive zoomable image using every page from 2004's magazine issues as individual pixels, discovering the mathematical limits of JPG files in the process.

PC Gamer recently digitised its full magazine archive spanning 33 years through 2008, with every page scanned from the publication's basement. An editor decided to repurpose these archives creatively by building a photo mosaic where individual magazine pages function as pixels in a larger image.

The final mosaic, built from every 2004 issue including specials, can be zoomed up to 6000% magnification and supports up to 11000% zoom before individual image resolution deteriorates. An interactive viewer lets readers gradually zoom out to discover what the underlying image depicts.

Creating the mosaic involved significant technical challenges. The editor used Python with libraries including Pillow, pypdfium2, numpy and Google's AI Studio to build a script that analysed the original target image, then managed, cropped and rasterised the magazine pages for colour matching and stitching. The actual mosaic generation ran entirely on a home PC without AI processing.

The project revealed hard limits in image file formats. JPEG files cannot exceed 65,535 pixels in dimension. When the script attempted to generate an 81,920 x 109,568 pixel image, it hit this absolute mathematical ceiling and required scaling back. PNG files have no such limitation, though the resulting files would reach multi-gigabyte sizes.

The process consumed enormous system resources. The Python script peaked at 52 GB of the editor's 64 GB system memory during mosaic creation, causing the PC to slow significantly. The final interactive viewer relies on the open-source OpenSeadragon viewer and Deep Zoom API for pyramid rendering, avoiding the need to load an 800 MB image directly on the webpage.

The editor invited readers to suggest other PC gaming classics from the archives for similar treatment.
