Jagex has taken down the trailer for RuneScape 3's upcoming Dragon Slayer 2 quest after players raised concerns over the use of generative AI in its production.

The trailer was shown during the studio's annual RuneFest convention, where it was presented as a cinematic reveal for the new quest. However, viewers quickly noticed several oddities, including a hand with six fingers and a pair of fantasy-style Air Jordans.

Players expressed frustration, particularly because Jagex had reaffirmed its stance against generative AI use just days earlier. That earlier controversy involved a third-party apparel collaboration, which also drew criticism for its use of AI-generated designs.

In response to the backlash, Jagex released a statement saying it was investigating the matter urgently. The studio said the trailer was produced by an external partner who had confirmed that no generative AI would be used. "But, among other things, there's a sixth finger and, well, that's pretty hard to explain away. For that we apologise," the statement read.

Jagex reiterated that it does not use generative AI to create its games, artwork, or marketing materials. The incident marks the second time in quick succession that concerns about AI use have arisen through trusted partners.

Following RuneFest, the studio said it is overhauling its review processes and plans to work with community creators to ensure future content meets its standards. Other trailers revealed at the event, including a Reignited version of RuneScape with HD visuals and a new MMO in development, were received more positively.
