Players looking to tackle Capcom's linear action title Onimusha: Way of the Sword can expect a substantial time commitment. According to recent guides, completing the campaign on Action difficulty takes approximately 30 to 40 hours. For completionists or players who are not accustomed to action games, finishing the title can take over 50 hours.

Structurally, the game shares similarities with other Capcom releases such as Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata. However, its campaign offers significantly more hours of content than both of those titles combined.

Throughout the adventure, protagonist Musashi can discover a total of seven weapons. Three of these armaments are unmissable and acquired through story progression, including the Bow found in an early chest along the path to the Refuge, The Two Celestials obtained automatically in Kiyomizu-dera, and the Firebird Flute awarded during the Shadows Fall mission. The remaining four weapons require players to explore off the beaten path. These optional finds include the Earth-Shakers in the Underground Laboratory beneath Nijo-jo Castle, Still Water near Arashiyama, The Flashing Void near Mount Oe Castle, and the Wind-Whipper earned during a main story quest.
