PC Gamer unlocks 4x Multi Frame Generation on RTX 4070 Super with unofficial mods

An RTX 4070 Super officially maxes out at 2x Multi Frame Generation, but using ReShade HDR Installer mods, PC Gamer tested up to 4x MFG and found surprisingly smooth performance in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Pragmata, though artifacting appeared in

Nvidia reserves its highest Multi Frame Generation rates for RTX 50-series GPUs, which pack more powerful Tensor cores and a dedicated AI Management Processor. The RTX 5090 can push 6x MFG in supported games, while older RTX 40-series cards officially max out at 2x. But PC gamers found a workaround.

PC Gamer tested unofficial mods via ReShade HDR Installer to unlock higher MFG rates on an RTX 4070 Super. The GPU officially supports 2x MFG, but the mods allowed testing up to 6x MFG, with practical testing capped at 4x since not all games support the highest unlocked tier. Testing used 1440p resolution, High graphical settings, DLSS Balanced mode, with ray tracing disabled.

Performance gains were substantial. In Black Myth: Wukong, unlocked 4x MFG delivered 170 average fps versus 64 fps with no MFG. Cyberpunk 2077 saw 219 average fps with 4x MFG compared to 134 fps baseline. Pragmata jumped from 111 fps to 242 fps. Lost Records: Bloom & Rage climbed from 82 fps to 201 fps. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 reached 234 fps from 97 fps. The Thaumaturge went from 130 fps to 224 fps.

Stability varied by title. Lost Records: Bloom & Rage felt consistently smooth with MFG active, with only subtle shadow softening on distant character models. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 exhibited noticeable frame hitching and artifacting, particularly ghosting when sprinting or gliding between rooftops in snow-covered Seattle. The Thaumaturge showed ghosting in conversation cutscenes and during combat, most visible when characters entered scenes, though subtler than in Bloodlines 2.

Frame consistency also differed. Lost Records achieved 54 fps 1% lows with 4x MFG. Cyberpunk 2077 maintained 86 fps 1% lows. Pragmata hit 97 fps 1% lows. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 dropped to 66 fps 1% lows. The Thaumaturge reached 52 fps 1% lows.

The testing was limited to single-player games only, as the unofficial MFG unlock mods are not officially supported and can trigger in-game anti-cheat detection systems in multiplayer titles. PC Gamer's approach prioritized extracting maximum performance from existing hardware rather than pursuing newer RTX 50-series cards, even as MFG introduces known blurry frames and latency issues across all supported generations.
