Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is currently in development for a 2027 release on PlayStation 5 as a massive expansion adding new storyline elements, areas, monsters, actions, and the Master Rank. Attendees at the PlayStation booth during Tokyo Game Show 2026 received the first opportunity to play a hands-on demo featuring Chatacabra, the boss variant of the new monster Araketa, and the returning Elder Dragon Teostra.

The expansion introduces Boost Action, a new mechanic that activates via the Boost Bracer to unleash weapon-specific attacks and empower certain actions for a limited duration. The Boost gauge fills gradually over time and through landed strikes. Activating Boost Action mid-combo or right after an attack recovery allows hunters to maintain continuous pressure. Destroying wounds with a Focus Strike while in the Boost state recharges the draining gauge, permitting high-level tactics such as shattering a wound right before Boost wears off. Using the Sword and Shield with the mechanic provides quick mobility to close distances, and triggering it up close serves as an immediate evasion tool by pivoting around to a monster's flank.

Players experienced hunting the boss variant of Araketa in a new area named Skybound Eyrie, which features floating islands and updrafts accessible by mounting a Seikret. Araketa hunts in packs and inflates its wings with air to execute heavy charge attacks or blast hunters backward. The boss variant coordinates with its pack through alpha barks that command rapid pounces, culminating in an ultimate move where the entire pack leaps into the heavens before a synchronized high-speed dive. Hunters can target a weak spot on the boss's throat exposed during roars to land a Focus Strike that cuts off its orders. Additionally, players can pick up small rock-hard creatures called Gundoraja in the area and hurl them directly at targets to stagger hyperactive beasts.

The demo also featured a battle against Elder Dragon Teostra in the Oilwell Basin. Alongside franchise staples like flame breath and blast explosions, Teostra displayed new attack patterns, including a move where the dragon rears high and slams both forelegs down with crushing force while pivoting on the spot. Weapons like the Switch Axe can utilize moves such as the Offset Rising Slash to deflect the heavy slam. Environmental hazards in the Oilwell Basin, such as thick oil mud, combined with scattered dust signaling incoming blasts to challenge player movement during the hunt.
