Modder brings leak-accurate car fueling mechanics into GTA 5

A modder has incorporated a working gas mechanic into GTA 5 inspired by unconfirmed Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks, using a mod called Fumes – Animated Persistent Fuel.

A dedicated modder continuing an ongoing project to transform Grand Theft Auto 5 has introduced a leak-accurate vehicle fueling mechanic inspired by unconfirmed information surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6. While official sources have not shown cars needing petrol in upcoming titles, the feature has circulated through contraband Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks, prompting community experimentation.

To achieve this implementation in Grand Theft Auto 5, the project utilized a modification titled Fumes – Animated Persistent Fuel. The mod ensures that every vanilla and online vehicle carries a real fuel tank that empties during driving and retains its fuel level across sessions. Rather than utilizing a simple menu interaction, the system requires players to exit the vehicle, walk to the pump, physically remove the nozzle, and handle a hose connected via a physics rope.

Testing the modification proved challenging due to an existing installation crowded with contradictory mods, ambient gang violence, and hitmen. After navigating these technical hurdles and utilizing character abilities to secure a vehicle, the mod successfully functioned alongside a new minimap meter tracking petrol levels. Despite minor error messages from other conflicting installed modifications, the robust in-person refueling mechanics operated as intended at a petrol station.
