Memory Crisis Drives Uncertainty Over PlayStation 6 Launch Date

Sony has yet to fix a launch date for the PlayStation 6 due to an ongoing memory crisis, trade wars, and disrupted chip and energy supplies.

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki has stated that the company is yet to fix a date for the PlayStation 6 launch due to an ongoing memory crisis. Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Totoki pointed to trade wars and disrupted supplies of energy and chips as the biggest current challenges for the company. The global component shortage, which is driven by widespread investment in artificial intelligence data centers, is impacting Sony's plans regarding the PlayStation 6.

While analysts had previously expected the upcoming console to arrive sometime next year, expectations have drifted further out because of the shortage. Discussing the broader tech industry challenges, Totoki emphasized that a chief executive's most important task is making sure the business survives in this landscape. Sony's latest fiscal report noted that hardware and software sales are beginning to slow with the current platform around six years into its lifecycle, following multiple hardware price increases over the last year. However, the company confirmed it has secured the quantity of memory necessary to meet projected hardware sales during FY26.

Sony is not the only company affected by the component shortage. Microsoft, Nintendo, and Valve have also adjusted hardware prices in response. In April, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma noted that the memory crisis could impact next-generation hardware availability and pricing. Two months later, Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball stated that demand for Xbox consoles is outstripping supply, with the crisis posing a severe limitation on production speeds and causing the company to rethink its next-generation console project, Project Helix.

Despite the challenges posed by AI data center investments, Totoki remains optimistic about artificial intelligence tools in game development, highlighting examples such as using AI to animate character hair. Totoki stated that AI can enhance human creativity rather than replace it, noting that companies must take advantage of AI or face a threat from it.
