Marvel's Wolverine PS5 Hotfix Reduces Scent Trails as Sales Predictions Show Strong Start

Insomniac has begun addressing criticism of Marvel's Wolverine on PS5 with a new hotfix that reduces the intensity and opacity of the game's scent trails. The developer says it's exploring ways to disable the feature entirely in future updates.

The scent trails, which some players jokingly refer to as "blue fart trails," are designed to reflect Wolverine's hunting capabilities. They highlight routes to collectibles and important items when nearby and serve story purposes in certain moments. Some players view the feature as part of broader "hand-holding" design common in modern AAA games, while others have criticized painted surfaces that highlight the main path.

The hotfix is available now on PS5. In its patch notes, Insomniac acknowledged the feedback and committed to exploring a toggle option to disable the scent trails entirely.

Despite the controversy, sales predictions suggest Wolverine is performing well commercially. Analytics firm Alinea estimates the game sold 1.9 million units in approximately three days, generating around $130 million in revenue. According to these estimates, roughly 23 percent of copies were physical sales.

Analyst Rhys Elliott, citing Alinea data, reports that Wolverine has already become the sixth top-grossing PS5 release of 2026 and has outsold the lifetime PS5 total of Death Stranding 2. The game is also outpacing Ghost of Yotei according to the same estimates.

It's important to note that Alinea's methodology is not publicly disclosed, and its accuracy remains debated among industry observers. These figures should be treated as estimates rather than official sales data until Sony provides confirmation.

The strong commercial performance suggests the game is resonating with mainstream players despite mixed critical reception and enthusiast criticism regarding its linearity and design choices. The title appears to be building on the commercial success of Insomniac's Spider-Man games.
