Marvel’s Wolverine Developers Discuss Capturing the Essence of Logan Ahead of September 15 Release
Ahead of the September 15 release on PS5, the creative team behind Marvel’s Wolverine discuss crafting Logan’s combat, story, and design.

Players will soon be able to sink their claws into Marvel’s Wolverine when it comes to PlayStation 5 on September 15. Ahead of its release, the creative team behind the claws sat down to discuss crafting Wolverine’s final design, choosing which allies, foes, and locations to feature, and how they captured the essence of Logan. The team includes creative director Marcus Smith, game director Mike Daly, senior art director Grant Hollis, senior animation director Brian Wyser, and narrative director Walt Williams.
Insomniac has built a strong reputation for comic book adaptations through its work on Spider-Man. According to Marcus Smith, starting the process over for another character meant going back to the drawing board to redefine how the character operates. Smith noted that Peter Parker and Miles Morales are very different than Logan. While Spider-Man is an open-world game tied closely to New York, everything with Wolverine is closer, more visceral, more contact with the world, and more grounded.
Grant Hollis explained that the claws and the combat are essential for designing Wolverine. Logan is described as a reluctant hero who gets the job done by any means necessary. From a visual and animation standpoint, the team figured out what it means to be Wolverine by treating Logan like a tank. He is messier, clumsier, and breaks more stuff, which led the art team to lean heavily into blood, destruction, and damage to both Logan and his enemies.
Walt Williams highlighted the collaboration with actor Liam McIntyre, who voices and portrays Logan. McIntyre brought a wide range to express the ferocity and animalistic rage of the character, alongside a gentle and kind soul. This duality forms the core of the narrative. Mike Daly added that video games make this powerful because players do not just see the cinematic on screen, but feel the difficult-to-control rage for themselves.
When building out the Battle Reborn suit, the art team knew early on that they wanted two colors inspired by past iterations from the 1980s, specifically utilizing yellow alongside black rather than brown. They wanted a tactical edge based on real-world military outfits and motorcycle body armor that someone could fabricate realistically within a lived-in universe.
The story also features a carefully selected cast of allies and villains. Smith explained that Logan is an introvert who would prefer to sit in a cabin, making a team filled with conflict ideal for high drama. Characters like Sabretooth and Mystique bring different outlooks and relationships from their shared past in Team X. Jean Grey shares a mutual obligation to protect the vulnerable, though their approaches differ.
To challenge Logan, the development team selected enemies who could believably contend with a dangerous character. Mike Daly noted that the Reavers fit well as hyper-lethal cyborg mercenaries with the equipment, armor, and manpower to face off against Wolverine. Additionally, the Hand bring expert training in ancient tactics and deadly weapons, fitting naturally into mission objectives.
