Marvel's Wolverine Sells 1.9 Million Copies in Three Days Despite Mixed Reception

Alinea Analytics reports the PS5 exclusive generated $130 million in its opening weekend, with over one-fifth of sales from physical copies. The game has already outsold Death Stranding 2's lifetime PS5 performance.

Marvel's Wolverine has sold approximately 1.9 million copies across PlayStation 5 in its first three days, generating $130 million in revenue according to market analysis firm Alinea Analytics. The figure includes one million copies from pre-launch digital pre-orders.

The sales milestone comes despite mixed critical reception and online criticism aimed at the game's design choices. Eurogamer's review called it "just fine," while GamesRadar+ noted it was "never a bad experience, just an underwhelming one full of odd choices." Wolverine carries a 77 Metacritic score and 6.4 user rating across 3,500 reviews.

Physical sales accounted for 22.9% of total revenue. This physical-to-digital split differs notably from other recent PlayStation releases. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 generated 35% of its PS5 revenue from physical sales, Astro Bot saw 46% from disc-based copies, and Ghost of Yotei reached 37.6%.

Geographically, 53% of sales came from the US, 7% from the UK, 5% from France, and 4% from Canada. The early performance already positions Wolverine as the top-performing new PlayStation Studios game for 2024, surpassing titles like Saros (510,000 units), Marathon (1.8 million across all platforms), and Marvel Tōkon (740,000 units across all platforms).

In three days, Wolverine has surpassed Death Stranding 2's lifetime PS5 sales of 1.8 million copies and $129 million. It trails only Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which generated $250 million in three days. The game ranks as the sixth top-grossing PS5 release of the year despite its brief availability, already outselling titles that have been on market considerably longer.

Player overlap data reveals 82% of Wolverine buyers previously purchased Marvel's Spider-Man, while 70% owned Spider-Man 2. Additionally, 43% of players have experience with Marvel Rivals, the hero shooter released earlier in the year.

Online discussion has centered on specific design elements, including quicktime events that cannot fail and colorful scent trails that players colloquially refer to as "fart gas." Despite this commentary, sales trajectory suggests the conversation has not dampened consumer interest.

Insomniac Games has acknowledged feedback. "We have been 100% listening," the studio stated in response to negative reception. Sony plans to end disc production for new PlayStation games by 2028, though physical demand for Wolverine suggests continued market interest in that format.
