Rockstar Details In-Game Health App and Survival Mechanics in GTA 6

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson confirmed that GTA 6 will track protagonist health attributes, including sleep, weight changes, and physical maintenance.

Rockstar Games is introducing deeper simulation and survival mechanics to Grand Theft Auto 6, going further than previous titles like GTA San Andreas and Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar North co-studio head and development lead Rob Nelson confirmed in an interview that an in-game health app will monitor protagonists Lucia and Jason to track metrics such as whether they are well-rested.

According to Nelson, sleep tracking will have direct effects on the regeneration of certain character attributes, meaning players could face in-game penalties if their characters lack proper rest. The tracking system extends to a variety of other lifestyle elements. Weight management returns, allowing both Jason and Lucia to gain weight if they consume large amounts of food, or conversely, lose muscle mass if players fail to maintain their physical condition.

Additionally, the game will require players to refuel and recharge vehicles. Other detailed environmental features include potential facial changes resulting from overnight crime benders, as well as the ability to browse satirized social media feeds within the game. However, developers ultimately decided against requiring players to restock the couple's fridge. Driving mechanics in the upcoming title are designed to combine elements from both GTA 4 and GTA 5.
