Rockstar North Co-Studio Head Says GTA 6 Aims for Red Dead Redemption 2 Style Emotional Connection

Rockstar Games aims to build a deep emotional connection between players and Grand Theft Auto 6 protagonists Jason and Lucia, drawing inspiration from the reception of Red Dead Redemption 2 protagonist Arthur Morgan.

Speaking to French outlet TroisCouleurs, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson discussed the developer's goals for the upcoming game. Nelson explained that the studio wants to translate the depth and interactivity of Red Dead Redemption 2 into Grand Theft Auto 6, alongside the strong bond players developed with its main character.

"We wanted to take the depth that we were able to add into the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 and the ability to interact with the world in a much more significant way, but then also this sort of emotional connection that people end up having with Arthur," Nelson said.

Rockstar chose to return to multiple protagonists for Grand Theft Auto 6, but focused on a couple to make their actions and relationship feel more impactful than the dynamic between the trio in Grand Theft Auto 5. Nelson noted that quieter, intimate moments between Jason and Lucia are intentional design choices to help build tension during action-heavy sequences. He described a scenario where one character is in danger, saying, "when you see her get thrown down the stairs and then you switch to him, and you can’t hear her, it’s the feeling of concern."

According to Nelson, these subdued moments were "some of the most compelling aspects of Red Dead Redemption 2," and the development team wanted to bring similar elements into Grand Theft Auto 6 to enhance the narrative.
