GSC Game World Explains S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Release Decision: Fresh Feedback and Market Realities
At Gamescom 2026, GSC Game World's CEO explained why the studio released S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 in its launch state, citing the need for fresh player feedback and challenging market conditions.

At Gamescom 2026, GSC Game World CEO and head of game direction Ievgen Grygorovych discussed the studio's decision to release S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 despite its well-documented launch issues, speaking with PC Gamer's Joshua Wolens about the complex factors behind the timing.
Grygorovych cited both creative and financial considerations. "To make something better, you need to receive feedback, and this feedback should be fresh," he explained. "From a business perspective, it's also impossible, because it's very expensive to do two years of additional work … in most cases, it's unrealistic."
The studio faced extraordinary circumstances during development. GSC Game World's work on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was interrupted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, forcing the team to relocate from Kyiv. The project was subsequently hamstrung by a devastating office fire and numerous leaks. Despite these obstacles and subsequent delays, the game ultimately released in a buggy state.
Beyond GSC's specific challenges, Grygorovych pointed to broader industry headwinds as another factor. "You have to always find the trade-offs that allow you to bring the best experience you can with what you have," he said. "It's always a balance because every developer would like to have an infinite amount of time, but the market around is awful: lots of layoffs, studios are closing. So actually, the market state is not very promising. We're just trying to find the best configuration we can."
