Game Companies Could Learn Wrong Lessons From GTA 6’s $80 Price, Analyst Says

Gaming has never been more expensive, and as the highest-profile game to set its standard edition price at $80, Grand Theft Auto 6 has players wondering if other publishers will follow suit with their AAA releases. In a wide-ranging interview with GameSpot regarding how a game's price is determined, Ampere Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott expressed concern that publishers could misinterpret the pricing strategy.

Elliott explained that other publishers might make pricing decisions based on GTA 6, believing it opened the floodgates for every major AAA game to cost $80. "So my worry is that a lot of publishers read 'GTA is $80' as a green light and push their own run-of-the-mill or new-IP games to $80, when the right lesson is the opposite," Elliott told GameSpot. Instead, Elliott notes that most publishers should hold a $70 base and layer premium editions on top, ranging from $80 to $100 with early access, cosmetics, and season passes. This traditional approach lets superfans pay more while everyone else pays the base price or waits for a discount.

With the rising cost of living, an $80 price tag for most AAA games is a tough sell, although people are paying for GTA 6's $100 edition at high rates. Other companies, such as Nintendo, have hesitated to price major releases like Donkey Kong Bananza at $80, opting to keep it at $70 instead. As console prices continue to rise—with next-gen systems potentially eclipsing $1,000—individual game pricing becomes increasingly crucial for average consumers.
