Dragon Quest 11 S on Switch 2 delivers sharp performance but stumbles on upgrade paths

Square Enix's Switch 2 port of Dragon Quest 11 S showcases strong optimization with Quality and Performance modes, but the lack of save transfer and upgrade options from the original Switch version frustrates existing players.

Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition has arrived on Nintendo Switch 2, and the port demonstrates how well the ten-year-old RPG can perform on newer hardware when optimized for the platform from the ground up.

The Switch 2 version benefits from being built on the same architecture as the original Switch port. Rather than scaling down from other versions, Square Enix tailored this release to Nintendo's hardware, which pays dividends in visual fidelity and frame rate options.

On TV mode at 1080p, Performance mode targets 60 fps with minimal visual compromise, while Quality mode aims for 1440p at 30 fps. The performance mode represents the sweeter option for most TV setups, delivering sharper visuals than the original PS4 release alongside smoother gameplay. The differences between modes are subtle enough that close inspection is needed to spot changes in aliasing and distant lighting.

Handheld mode offers a more pronounced split. Quality mode provides a crisp 1080p display at 30 fps with full lighting effects, while Performance mode maintains 1080p resolution but reduces texture detail and lighting complexity to hit 60 fps. The UI remains clear in both modes, and the handheld experience represents a significant step up from the original Switch version, even with backwards compatibility boost enabled.

However, the port is hamstrung by publisher decisions that frustrate existing Switch owners. There is no upgrade path from the original Switch version to Switch 2, and save data does not transfer between versions. Players who own Dragon Quest 11 S on Switch must purchase the full game again and restart from the beginning if they want to experience the enhanced Switch 2 edition.

This upgrade policy is not unique to Square Enix, but it stands out given the publisher's willingness to update other titles for Switch 2. The decision creates friction for players mid-way through their upgrade from Switch to Switch 2.

In Japan, Square Enix is offering a physical game-key card version that includes an exclusive sleeve featuring gold details and trim alongside the standard box art. This bonus does little to address the save and upgrade concerns.

For newcomers or players willing to restart, the Switch 2 version represents the best handheld way to play one of Square Enix's modern JRPG classics. For existing Switch owners, the lack of upgrade conveniences makes a fresh purchase a harder sell unless a sale brings down the price.
