Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Beta Impressions Point to a Grounded Return for Infinity Ward
Early impressions from the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta highlight a return to grounded gunplay, the exclusion of last-gen consoles, and refined gameplay mechanics.

Following years of iterative releases and a perceived identity crisis within the franchise, Infinity Ward has returned with the beta for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Early impressions indicate that the studio is steering the series back toward the grounded, heavy-weight feel established by Modern Warfare 2019. By dropping support for last-gen console hardware, the development team has utilized modern technology to enhance weapon animations, lighting, and introduce dynamic volumetric smoke during combat encounters.
One of the most notable technical shifts in the beta is the removal of artificial bullet bloom. Instead of random spray patterns within a widening cone, bullets leave the barrel precisely where the physical gun is pointed during recoil. This adjustment transforms hipfire into a viable, skill-based mechanic for close-quarters firefights. In multiplayer modes, rapid daily hotfixes from Infinity Ward have tuned damage ranges while maintaining a fast Time-to-Kill pace. Map designs featured in the test sessions, such as Cachette and Lithium, favor a mix of tight engagements, verticality, and power positions over traditional three-lane layouts, alongside the return of the large-scale Ground War mode and the .50 GS hand cannon.
In a franchise first, the beta also provided access to a single-player mission titled "Entrenched." The level features a bombastic assault on a nuclear power plant, incorporating dirt-carved trench lines, vehicular combat, and refined cover-mounting systems that snap to irregular geometry like wooden bunkers. Meanwhile, the updated Warzone preview benefits from the engine physics overhaul, where slide-canceling returns as a weighted tactical dodge that no longer refreshes the Tactical Sprint meter.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026, for the PlayStation 5 platform.
