Blizzard Explains Early Announcements for Diablo 5 and StarCraft Shooter

Blizzard has revealed why it announced Diablo 5 and a new StarCraft project years in advance of their planned releases.

Blizzard recently announced new projects in the StarCraft and Diablo franchises well ahead of their expected launch windows. Diablo 5 is targeted for release in 2029, while the new StarCraft shooter project is slated for 2030. Speaking to Bloomberg ahead of BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard president Johanna Faries explained that the early reveals are intended to demonstrate confidence in the studio's upcoming lineup. Faries stated that the company wants to show fans it is confident by making these announcements early, emphasizing a new approach focused on shipping major titles on time.

The upcoming StarProject shooter project was introduced with a cinematic trailer highlighting the dark science fiction universe of the franchise. The footage featured Terran Dominion soldiers training to fight the Zerg, focusing on a single recruit who rises through the ranks before facing the Zerg Swarm. StarCraft shooter project lead Dan Hay and associate director AnaLee Heartling noted in an interview with GamesRadar that the team has been working on the game for some time and wanted to share it with a community that has waited long for a new entry. Hay added that putting a target date on the wall demonstrates serious commitment from the development team.

Diablo 5 was also unveiled during BlizzCon 2026 with a cinematic trailer revealing that its story takes place after the Lord of Terror has successfully conquered Sanctuary. Players will participate in a traveling caravan journeying across various locations to purge demonic corruption from the world. Alongside the announcement of the next numbered entry, Blizzard confirmed that no further expansions are planned for Diablo 4 at this time. Development teams are currently directing their focus toward ongoing seasonal content for the action role-playing game alongside the active development of Diablo 5. Blizzard representatives noted that the team feels they concluded the Story of Hatred successfully and are now moving forward to tell the Story of Terror.
