Blizzard is keeping the core perspective of its flagship action role-playing franchise intact for the next installment. Speaking to GameSpot at BlizzCon 2026, executive producer Matt Zitterman explained that the studio is not looking to shake up the isometric viewpoint with Diablo 5. Instead, the team wants to improve and evolve the mechanics to make combat feel more visceral and action-forward. This approach builds upon the fast combat introduced in Diablo 3 and refined in Diablo 4.

To shape itemization and overall design, the development team is looking backward for inspiration across the entire series. Zitterman noted that Blizzard wants the game to feature elements that appeal to players regardless of which past title was their favorite. Itemization draws inspiration from Diablo 2 alongside successful ideas carried forward from Diablo 3 and Diablo 4, giving familiar concepts a fresh take.

Set for launch in 2029, Diablo 5 takes place decades after the Lord of Terror successfully conquered Sanctuary. Players will face a setting without safe harbors or strongholds, requiring them to stay on the move and recruit allies to a caravan of survivors. Additionally, the game will feature more character classes than ever before, including returning favorites like the Monk and Demon Hunter alongside the brand-new Plague Knight class, which uses disease and pestilence in combat.
