Resident Evil director Zach Cregger is addressing fan frustration regarding his upcoming film adaptation. Many longtime fans of the franchise have expressed disappointment that the latest movie does not feature Leon Kennedy, one of the most beloved protagonists in modern gaming history. Cregger admits that his film will not include Leon and is speaking out about the backlash surrounding the project's previews.

In an interview with IGN, Cregger stated that he initially underestimated how deeply the fan base desired to see Leon Kennedy on the big screen. However, he also noted that he would be hypocritical not to understand the fans' position. Cregger explained that he has never watched any previous Resident Evil film adaptations because he believes they fail to accurately depict the franchise he enjoys.

Cregger shared his perspective on the situation, explaining that he expected game fans to be excited about someone transforming Resident Evil into a survival horror movie. He admitted that he did not initially appreciate the sentiment that audiences had been waiting for Leon's story, though he offered an apology that his film tells a different narrative. He noted that he understands the frustration because his own attitude toward previous movies mirrors the skepticism of the fans.

Despite the differences in storytelling, Cregger hopes that skeptics will still attend theater screenings. He expressed a desire for viewers to recognize his genuine passion for the series and the pride he took in crafting a Resident Evil survival horror film. The latest effort to adapt the franchise for the big screen is scheduled to premiere on Friday, September 18.
