Xbox Reportedly Makes Up Less Than 5% Of US Physical Sales In 2026

New data regarding the gaming industry's performance in the United States indicates that physical software sales for Xbox consoles make up a very small fraction of the market. According to details shared by Mat Piscatella of the analysis group Circana, new physical games sold in the U.S. this year lean heavily toward other platforms, leaving Xbox Series X and Xbox One with just over 4 percent.

As outlined in reports from outlets like Kotaku and Pure Xbox, Circana's monthly data shows that 63 percent of all physical gaming sales in the U.S. this year have been for Nintendo platforms, including the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Meanwhile, PlayStation accounts for 32 percent of the physical market. When Piscatella was asked to clarify the remaining distribution, he noted that PC also recorded a small share of physical sales through specific releases, leaving Xbox with its slice of just over four percent.

These figures arrive amid ongoing discussions regarding the future of physical media in the gaming industry. Discussions have heightened following announcements from competitors like Sony regarding future disc production timelines. While some gamers have expressed a desire for Microsoft to fully commit to a physical software future and capture market share from competitors, industry observers point out that these low physical sales figures for Xbox hardware create a challenging environment for maintaining physical distribution lines. Even with questions surrounding how long physical game production will continue across the industry, market analysts suggest that current sales volumes make widespread physical support an unlikely prospect moving forward.
