Xbox Patents Ad-Credit System to Show Ads During Gameplay
Microsoft has filed a patent for a system that would display advertisements during Xbox game sessions, pausing at natural breaks like loading screens and menus. Players would earn ad-free playtime credits after watching ads.

Microsoft has filed a patent application for an "ad-credit" system designed to display advertisements during Xbox game sessions. The system, titled "Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access," identifies natural pauses in gameplay such as loading screens, menus, and the end of missions or rounds to show advertisements.
During ads, gameplay and controls would suspend so players don't lose progress. After viewing an advertisement, players would receive a "credit" providing ad-free play, potentially ranging from 15 minutes to an hour or more.
The patent describes ad-free playtime being linked to progression or in-game events. Examples include completing five rounds, finishing a level, playing three multiplayer matches, defeating an NPC, or completing a project or task.
While advertisements are already common in mobile games, this system would represent a different approach for PC and console gameplay. It remains unclear whether the patented system could eventually extend to Xbox cloud gaming on mobile, where Microsoft is already testing ad-supported sessions.
The patent filing does not confirm that Microsoft plans to launch the system commercially. Patents are filed regularly and do not necessarily mean the described system will become a commercial product.
