X-Plane 12 Update 12.4.4 Beta Launches with Performance Boosts and New Features

Laminar Research has released the open beta of update 12.4.4 for its flight simulator, X-Plane 12. Dubbed the "SDK Update," this release significantly expands the simulator's Software Development Kit with new capabilities for creators, alongside noticeable performance enhancements and visual upgrades for general players.

On the technical side, the update introduces several rendering performance improvements. These include a hybrid tiled-lighting system, a new on-disk texture cache, and sparse residency technology. According to testing across a sample of CPU-limited systems, update 12.4.4 produced an average 6.4 percent improvement in CPU performance.

The update also introduces persistent, regionalized snow coverage. This new system allows different regions of the world to depict different snow conditions simultaneously, depending on geographical variation. The feature is compatible with both live and historical weather, and it works on top of orthophoto scenery. Additionally, developers have improved the weather radar, delivering recalibrated precipitation returns, upgraded NEXRAD, and a new radial-sweep depiction on the X1000 unit.

For scenery and visuals, the beta adds 78 new liveries and six new static aircraft types. These additions include the Airbus A350-900, Airbus A350-1000, Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules, Eurofighter Typhoon, Gulfstream 650, and Embraer Phenom 300. New scenery assets also arrive in this build, specifically introducing overhead powerline facades and accessible passenger boarding ramps.

As the "SDK Update" name implies, developers will gain access to tools like the new Panel Graphics API, xLua 2.0, Dear ImGui, and the Chromium Embedded Framework. X-Plane 12 is currently available for PC, including Mac and Linux platforms, with the beta now open to all users for testing.
