WoW: Forever's strict roleplay ruleset may isolate the community it aims to serve

A veteran roleplay community member questions whether Blizzard's proposed ruleset restrictions for WoW: Forever will actually benefit roleplayers, who spend much of their time doing dungeons and raids alongside non-RPers.

World of Warcraft has long hosted dedicated roleplay servers where players develop characters and storylines in-character. But Blizzard's approach to roleplay in WoW: Forever may be too restrictive for how RP communities actually function, according to a player with over 15 years of roleplay experience.

The concern centres on cross-ruleset grouping restrictions. Blizzard has stated that characters in different rulesets cannot group together for activities, and players who want to switch rulesets must create an entirely new character. While separating roleplay and non-roleplay players in open-world zones makes sense, the restriction extends to dungeons and raids, where the distinction becomes unnecessary.

Most roleplay servers host a mix of committed roleplayers, casual participants, and observers. The key distinction in practice is simple: players don't roleplay while running dungeons. In-character roleplay happens during downtime and open-world interaction; during instanced content, the community plays normally regardless of which server they inhabit.

"Roleplay servers tend to work on informal manners without one real 'one size fits all' model of in-character/out of character conduct," the player notes. The strict naming conventions and behaviour rules Blizzard proposes may also clash with how existing RP communities self-regulate through established norms rather than formal enforcement.

The result could fragment communities unnecessarily. Players who want to roleplay but also raid with non-RPer friends would need separate characters, discouraging participation rather than fostering it. A more flexible approach, allowing grouping across rulesets for instanced content while maintaining separation in the open world, might better serve the diverse player base that actually inhabits roleplay realms.

I've been doing roleplay for 15+ years, and I don't think WoW: Forever needs a ruleset for it
