WoW Forever player driven to frustration by chaotic boulder quest in Orgrimmar
A PC Gamer writer discovers that World of Warcraft Classic's server-side gathering mechanics turn a simple rock-collection quest into a competitive free-for-all.

World of Warcraft Forever is providing a fresh perspective on Blizzard's classic MMO for players without nostalgia goggles. One writer returning to the game after years away found themselves enjoying much of the old-school design, from the lack of global tagging to archaic gathering quests where server-side nodes mean missing out when other players beat you to them.
The appeal wore thin in Orgrimmar's back alleys. While exploring the Horde capital, the writer picked up a quest called Rocks to Rest from troll children, asking for eight rocks to craft furniture. Straightforward enough on paper, but the reality proved brutal.
With roughly 10 players competing for sporadically-spawning rocks, the quest became what the writer described as "the wild west." Rocks would appear at random intervals, triggering a chaotic dash as players raced to be the first to loot each one. A millisecond too slow, and someone else claims it. The writer managed the first rock with ease, then watched the quest devolve into constant camera rotation and positioning scrambles.
The frustration peaked when a rock spawned directly behind the writer. By the time they rotated their camera back, another player had already secured it. Despite expecting endgame content or complex systems to test their patience, it was the humble boulder that broke them.
The experience underscores how WoW Forever's design choices, built around cooperation and scarcity, can create unexpected friction points when dozens of players converge on limited resources.
