PC Gamer's "My First MMO Character" Series Explores Player Nostalgia Through World of Warcraft

PC Gamer has published the fourth entry in its "My first MMO character" series, spotlighting player memories tied to World of Warcraft and other online games. This installment follows Lincoln Carpenter's experience with Maldirr, an Orc Warrior born around 2005.
Carpenter's WoW journey began unexpectedly. After watching raid clear videos on WarcraftMovies.com and researching legendary weapon names on Thottbot, he convinced his parents to fund a subscription. He intended to roll an Orc hunter but misclicked during character creation, only discovering his mistake after noticing the new character lacked a bow. Rather than restart, he committed to the Warrior class.
Maldirr became his main for several expansions, with Carpenter spending considerable time grinding Arms DPS rotations and executing raid strategies. He eventually branched into alternate characters, including a Worgen rogue, undead mage, and dwarf shaman. Today, when subscription periods return, he occasionally levels Maldirr for nostalgic reasons.
The character still wears the Stone Guard tabard earned through extensive Alterac Valley sessions. Though Carpenter's hair color changed from brown to gray over the years, Maldirr remains a touchstone to his early MMO days. The series reflects how WoW shaped generations of player memories through both intended and accidental gameplay moments.
