World of Warcraft: Forever Launches With Full Controller Support
Blizzard's upcoming WoW Classic evolution will support controllers at launch on November 4, with alpha builds already playable at BlizzCon 2026. The feature maps 28 button combinations across triggers, d-pad, and face buttons.

World of Warcraft: Forever, Blizzard's next evolution of WoW Classic with significant content additions, will launch with full controller support on November 4. The feature was playable during a hands-on demo at BlizzCon 2026, marking the first time an official controller scheme has been available for the MMORPG.
The control scheme maps abilities and spells across the d-pad and face buttons, with trigger buttons providing access to eight keybinds each. Holding both triggers simultaneously unlocks an additional eight keybinds, totaling 28 button combinations. Shoulder buttons cycle through friendly or enemy NPCs, while face buttons handle interactions and jumping. Despite labeling in the demo as "alpha" state, the system functioned intuitively during testing.
Combat and NPC interaction felt natural for controller play, though menu navigation presented challenges. Inventory management required cycling through radial menus and individual items, which proved slower than traditional keyboard shortcuts. Spellcaster classes, which access numerous ranked spell variants in WoW Classic and Forever, may struggle with button constraints despite the expanded layout.
Blizzard has only offered barebones controller support previously; players have relied on unofficial add-ons like ConsolePort for console-like experiences. The full implementation for Forever represents a significant accessibility improvement and opens possibilities beyond PC gaming.
Retail WoW, currently in its Midnight expansion, would arguably benefit more from controller support due to reduced ability complexity and inventory demands compared to Classic versions. However, Blizzard has made no official announcements about bringing the feature to retail, though the increasing shared development between WoW versions suggests eventual compatibility remains possible.
The controller support fuels ongoing speculation about a potential console version. Microsoft owns both Blizzard and Xbox, and fan theories point to user-made add-on restrictions and ability pruning as preparation for console development. Blizzard stated last year it would announce any console version publicly. Controller support also enables official compatibility with handheld gaming PCs, which have grown in popularity.
GameSpot reached out to Blizzard for clarification on broader controller support plans but had not received response at publication.
