World of Warcraft: Forever beta overwhelmed by unexpected player demand
Blizzard's Classic+ revival encountered server strain during its beta launch, surprising developers who underestimated nostalgia's pull. The studio scaled infrastructure after hitting load protection limits.

World of Warcraft: Forever's beta launch brought unexpected server trouble, though Blizzard resolved the issues quickly. The surprise came not from the problems themselves, but from the sheer number of players trying to access the game.
Forever is a Classic+ experience, recreating WoW as it existed in 2004 while improving the original vision. The expansion adds over 1,000 quests, new zones, redesigned talent trees, new racial abilities, and overhauled lighting.
The technical problem stemmed from infrastructure assumptions. "Betas for WoW aren't usually huge meter movers so this environment just isn't that powerful," explained Tom Ellis, senior game producer, on X. The regional server with two connections triggered Blizzard's BGS metering system, which protects services from extreme load. This occurred despite the server not reaching CPU capacity, an unusual situation Ellis called unprecedented in his 20 years at Blizzard.
The fix was direct: scaling from two connections to eight "immediately the flood gates opened once again." Within hours, performance stabilized. "Right now things are incredibly smooth," Ellis wrote.
The underlying message from developers revealed genuine shock at Forever's appeal. Josh Greenfield, senior game designer, noted the "craziest numbers I've seen in 17 years working at Blizzard and almost eight years on classic." Greenfield added: "We've got something really special here."
Forever combines the friction and inconvenience of early WoW with meaningful improvements, creating a version that honors the original while addressing specific pain points. The beta's overwhelming response suggests players hungry for that specific blend of nostalgia and refinement.
