Blizzard developer says World of Warcraft: Forever beta broke 17-year server records
World of Warcraft: Forever's beta test drew unexpectedly massive player numbers, causing initial disconnects but validating Blizzard's confidence ahead of the November launch.

World of Warcraft: Forever's beta test this week exceeded Blizzard's expectations by a significant margin. The vanilla-flavoured spin-off, built by the WoW Classic team, attracted so many players that the test environment struggled to handle the load, resulting in disconnections and lag during peak hours.
Josh Greenfield, a WoW Classic developer with 17 years at Blizzard, shared his excitement about the influx. "Man, it was hard to sleep last night, I was so excited. Beta has been crazy. The craziest numbers I've seen in 17 years working at Blizzard and almost 8 years on classic," he wrote on Twitter/X. "We've got something really special here."
The technical issues stemmed from the beta environment's limited infrastructure. Tom Ellis, senior game producer, explained that the test uses a basic PTR stack rather than production-grade hardware, and runs only a single regional realm. When players flooded login queues, the system couldn't handle the volume. "Shortly after we went live and when you got through the login queue, you were disconnected," Ellis said. "Our little BETA environment only uses one REGIONAL realm."
Blizzard resolved the problems within hours. "Marked live once again and you all poured in without fuss," Ellis reported. "Right now things are incredibly smooth for the first few hours of a public beta, Classic teams watching and fixing anything blocking that comes up but we're otherwise pretty much done for the night."
The strong beta response validates the project after its reveal at BlizzCon 2026. World of Warcraft: Forever launches globally on 4th November.
